CAREER

A career of any professional athlete lasts only 1/4 of his lifetime

We often forget how short the career of a professional athlete but the unbending truth in Triathlon is you peak late 30s and only for a short period of time you race at your absolute best.

SHORT COURSE – ITU

As for most, I first gave short course a go

After being selected for the Olympic Program for Rio 2016, I really gave it a shot.  Soon realized that my swim handicap and lack of natural ability would always be limiters and in 2010 I left the High Performance National Training Center to focus on IM racing.

LONG COURSE – IRONMAN

For me, where hard work really paid off

In long course I have found that my natural ability for sports was still a limiter but I could make up for most of it with hard work. The focus on long distance events really paid off and I became the first portuguese ever to win an official IRONMAN event in 2013.

IRONMAN™ World Championship starts as a professional

Beyond Triathlon

As an athlete I have this undeniable tendency for callenges and I’ve been venturous among other sports. While not being as competitive as in Triathlon, I have had goals of trying and finishing some grueling events.

Trail Running
Among the events I enter are trail running events. I’ve done mostly ‘middle course’ events ranging from 15 to 32km and to my record I have about 20 races completed with some notable results despite the technicality of the sport.

Some of my goals include entering multi-day trail races and setting foot in the Mont Blanc Trail Races (UTMB) weekend.

Haute Route Alps
If there is a must do for amateur cyclists, the Haute Route Alps tops the list. A 7-day bike stage race, covering the distance between Megeve and Nice, all through the Alps, with a total of 20,000m of climbing.

This is one of my most fond memories in the sport. It was just an amazing week, feeling like a through professional cyclist and enduring 7 days of grueling (but beautiful) mountain stages. Absolutely astonishing and something I will repeat after being a finisher in 2018

SwimRun Events
The swimrun events have been a fun way to get a solid morning of work without the hassle of carrying a bike everywhere.

I have only raced swimrun events in Portugal and while I’ve always done particularly well at these events, I haven’t really tried one of their main events Worldwide where competition is likely to be much more tight.
