If you are new in town or visiting the area, you will soon find out great training groups and facilities within reasonable distances. Based only on my personal experience, here are some of the rides and locations you can enjoy:
El Dorado Swimming Pool – located on Miller and Oak St in Scottsdale and for only $3 anyone can get their swim in and share or use any of their 8 to 13 available 25 yards lanes. Lunch hour is usually rush hour but even then I’m sure you can find a clear space to get down to business (and some tan).
Sun Devils Masters – main location is the Sun Devil Fitness Center in Tempe and for reasonable monthly fee you can join the best swimming program in town. They have other locations and multiple training sessions a day. Visit their website for more info.
Gainey/Tri Scottsdale ride – group ride every Tuesday (flat course) and Thursday (short hills) at 5:30am starting from Gainey Village Health Club on Doubletree. 60 to 90 min, fast paced, likely the most popular group ride during the week.
Tribe Multisport Rides – every Thursday (7:10pm) and Saturday (AM), starting from their shop on Indian School and Miller. The Thursday ride is a very fast, 60′ or 2-loop, crit style ride with numerous sprint points and boys from ASU Cycling always in the mix. Saturdays are (a little) more mellow, longer and the ride re-groups mid-way.
Pinnacle Peak Trail – awesome trail to hike, amazing to run. Go early AM as the place gets packed during daylight and if you actually run up and down the trail, be prepared for some sore calfs the next day. You can do a one loop, ~75-90′ run, starting from the trail parking going left and up to Dynamite, down to Pima and catch up to the back-end of the trail on Joomax.
I’m sure there are plenty of other options to swim, bike and run in Phoenix. As I continue to explore the area, I will update this page with more or different locations. Visit Clipped in AZ for more group rides.
